Lake Tahoe Skiing at Kirkwood Ski ResortYou Want Space...

Come here for that elbow room you crave. Rare private land and national forest bordering real wilderness. Come here to get away to one of the largest but least-populated counties in California. Arrive on one of the most scenic and traffic-free roads in the state and find thousands of acres waiting to give you what you want, so you can do what you want. It's a frantic world out there -- this is your sanctuary.

A Place with Character...

In the summer of 1860, Zachary Kirkwood entered the High Sierra into a world of cool alpine lakes, colorful meadows and towering cliffs. Staking his claim in the valley beneath a beautiful horseshoe-shaped mountain, for decades he stayed as host to cattlemen and weary travelers seeking shelter from the elements. The hospitality remains, the legend lives on and Kirkwood is the namesake.

Lake Tahoe Snowboarding at Kirkwood ResortZachary's legacy in this era is yet another group of pioneers, upholding the valley's tradition. It's what you might expect-friendly, outgoing, adventurous hosts still working diligently to join comfort with excitement for uniquely spirited guests.

A Place for Beauty...

Experience the raw, majestic beauty of the High Sierra -- vast bowls and snowfields surrounded by volcanic cliffs and granite ledges. Pristine meadows basking in the sun under crystal blue skies. Mile-long ridge tops decorated with immense cornices, cresting like frozen waves over the deepest sea of powder snow found in North America. A backdrop unmatched.

    • Skiers
      • Mini Rippers (ages 3-4): The Mini Rippers ski & snowplay program is a fun introduction to the sport for first timers and those still refining their beginner skills. The objectives are to familiarize the child with the equipment and snow environment, build the skills necessary to be successful, transfer that base to a skiing environment and most importantly to have FUN! As well as on snow instruction, children may participate in activities such as arts and crafts, sledding, a walk around the village, watching a movie, and snowplay. As children advance, they will be moved up to the Little Rippers program and will start exploring the mountain. Please note this is not a day care program, to participate children must be fully potty trained and ready to learn. The Mini Ripper program is physically demanding and each child must be ready to participate in a group setting without parents in attendance. Is your child ready for our Mini Programs? Click here for some general guidelines. Reservations are recommended as space is limited. A clearly legible copy of the birth certificate is required as proof of age for all three year old children.
Mini Rippers lesson times: Full day 10:30am - 3:30pm, half day (morning only) 10:30am - 12:30pm. Children should be dropped off ready to go half an hour before start of lesson. Drop off and pick up is in the Children's Activity Center at Timber Creek.
      • Little Rippers (ages 5-6): This program is designed specifically for 5 - 6 year old beginning skiers, providing a fun, safe learning environment. Those mini-rippers (3 & 4yrs) that progress onto the chairlift are promoted to the Little Rippers skiing groups as their skills build. Group sizes are kept small so that each child gets the individual attention that they require.
      • Mountain Explorers (ages 7-12): A program specifically designed for 7 - 12 year old skiers to help them progress quickly, while staying safe and having fun. The kids explore some amazing terrain - the specially designed terrain parks and all of Kirkwood's secret stashes - while shredding the snow with specially trained coaches. The Mountain Explorers program is a great way to encourage kids' sense of adventure and on-mountain safety and helps them to reach that next level with style and confidence. Little Rippers & Mountain Explorers lesson times: Full day 10:30am - 3:45pm, AM half day - 10:30am - 12:45pm, PM half day - 1:30pm - 3:45pm. This program uses the latest Burton technology designed for the youngest riders. The equipment removes the traditional boundaries confronted at this age enabling quicker skill development in a safe and fun environment. Our Children’s Center staff will help your child get outfitted and ready to ride. Each child will then focus on essential skills inside using our specially developed games and learning equipment, building each child’s skill and confidence in a familiar environment before moving onto the snow. Group sizes are kept small (a maximum of 3) so that enough attention is given to each child in the program.Reservations are recommended as space is strictly limited and available on a first come, first served basis. A clearly legible copy of the birth certificate is required as proof of age for all three year old children. Please keep in mind that the Mini Groms program is physically demanding and not advised for timid children. Each child must be ready to participate in a group setting without parents in attendance.
